Digital versus physical

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I was wondering where people's preferences were( in gaming)?

I...basically refuse to buy digital copies so all mine are physical copies from a store (I like the boxes, the art, the guides, the...holdingness of it, don't trust digital, change is bad etc etc many reasons). That includes DLC. My refusal to do so makes my best friend angry with me and I don't see why it matters to her.

Not knocking on you if prefer digital! I just can't get around to it myself.

So sound off on your preferred medium?

Physical. I just feel like if it's only digital, I can't trust that I really own it forever and it won't get taken away from me somehow. (Irrational, I know. And physical media have downsides too, like, say, getting scratched up or breaking, but my mind somehow doesn't worry about that as much.)

'Course, it's different if it's free, haha. I am happy to download all the free things.

I try to get physical copies (console games), especially of collector editions, but if I have to go digital, it doesn't bother me. At least with digital, they're a bit faster and less noisy because of the lack of a DVD.

But you might be missing out on DLC, depending on the game. :(

I like physical copies too, partially because it's not valid for me to download games right now, but even if it were I like the added safety I feel having a physical copy of a game. Plus, online services can change or go away and that worries me. (I don't want to just play my games now, I want to play them later too, maybe years down the road. Having a physical copy just seems safer to me.)

/is old school.

And yes, if I can have a physical copy of DLC I want that too. I bought New Vegas twice because of this. (I know I should've waited but I'm impatient.)

not ayrt

same here

downloads/online buying are not an option right now, and servers/companies do end eventually...

I almost always prefer physical if its not massively inconvenient. I've had a few bad experiences losing expensive digital products due to computer problems and I've been wary ever since. (Things like Steam are nice, but you still have to re-download everything you lost if your computer blows up, which can take FOREVER.)

Physical. There are old games I play that, if I were reliant on a server to install or to play, I'd be SOL by now, and I know that will someday (sooner than one would think) that will be true for the games of today. If it can be physically in my hands, I can control it.

I will only buy digital if it's a game i'd like to play but am not particularly emotionally invested in. If I do get really invested in it, I will look it up on amazon and buy a pretty physical edition, special edition or whatever. I display my gaming library and I like pretty versions of all my favourites.
