Er, not to rain on your parade, but Carriger isn't that blunt about it. To my recollection, Alexia is never once described as chubby or big. Her "generous curves" get a couple mentions in the first book, she's described as having an "assertive" and "handsome" figure, to be "nicely padded in exactly the right places", "full figured", etc. I doubt very much "chubby" is what's meant, because the author makes a point to mention that Alexia "keeps her figure" through regular exercise.

All of that is code for "big boobs" and not only is that arguably tip-toeing around the subject of size/weight, it's pretty much bog standard code to describe a not-model-thin woman without the risk of frightening away readers who don't want to read about a fat lady. I'm not saying this to criticize the author at all because I love the series and the character of Alexia in particular. But that's what it is.

Signed,

A reader with "generous curves" and then some *nudgenudgewinkwink*
