[Star Trek: The Next Generation]

I mean... one could argue that there's no difference between those two things, couldn't you? I think there's a very slim difference between the interpretation of canon where they're in love and your interpretation.

Also: everyone needs to watch Insurrection w/ Sirtis & Frakes' commentary. It is the most adorable thing ever, it is way too cute and way too enjoyable, especially for how dull that movie was. It's all Sirtis remembering nothing about the film and Frakes lightly teasing her for it and the two of them just joking around. It's great.

You can love your friends.

I always liked the hints in the series that they were probably hooking up on and off over the years even before INS. Compared to the eternal will they/won't they of Picard and Crusher, Riker and Troi always seemed way more chill.

(I also like the idea of Riker and Crusher as friends with benefits sometimes though.)

Everyone on the Enterprise was friends w/ benefits.

This is my headcanon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClP8n6asn3w

That's what I liked about their relationship as well! I mean, there was still drama, but there was less drama than in most teased out romantic couples on TV, and their enduring friendship through all of it was super sweet as well.

This. I really liked their friendship as well. All the major canon couples relationships stemmed from friendship which was nice.

I like this headcanon.

Personally, I ship Worf/Troi. Riker always annoyed me for some reason I could never articulate.

I loved Peter David's Imzadi series, but in show canon, I shipped Worf/Troi hard. I loved that episode with all the different AU possibilities of a relationship between them. Good times.

My problem with Worf/Troi was that while I saw Next Gen first when I was pretty young, I didn't remember it much. The first time I remember watching it, I has already seen DS9 and was a huge Worf/Jadzia fan. So going back and seeing Worf with Troi felt wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
This was pretty much me, too. Worf/Jadzia was awesome in DS9, and was cemented in my head before I went back to TNG.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. Worf/Troi never really worked for me... the chemistry was lacking, and it didn't seem like a natural pairing. Worf/Jadzia on the other hand just clicked.

Me, too. I thought Riker was a swaggering dick in TNG and Troi could do better. And then, on DS9, I liked Worf well enough on his own, but I wasn't a huge fan of Jadzia's whole Honourary Klingon shtick - IMO, Terry Farrell couldn't sell it - and I thought the Worf/Dax relationship was forced as hell.

So, yeah. Worf/Troi, and Dax/everyone (with a slight tendency towards Dax/McCoy). I adore the happy-poly vibe she gives off in the early seasons and lament that that got lost when Worf came along.

Nayrt

I forgot about Dax McCoy! The idea makes me smile. I'd love to see at least a passing mention in the reboot movies.

Agreed. I really loathe Riker.

Same. I'm watching TNG for the first time and as of s3 I'm reading them as adorably close but I'm failing to see the traditionally romantic chemistry.

I never really thought deeply about their relationship and what they had/were having because I found I was just content with their obviously open affection for each other, regardless or whether it was romantic or not.

Just- just the way they treated each other, the easy flow... I was happy with that, whatever it meant.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a long time since I've seen the show and I only know TNG and TOS, but wasn't their romance canon? I seem to remember that they'd been in a romantic relationship that ended before the pilot and they spent the entire run dancing around it because they'd ended it for professional reasons but both still had romantic feelings towards each other.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it is canonical that they had some sort of romantic relationship before the show, that they have some kind of positive feelings towards each other, and that in the last movie they get married. But I don't think any of that necessarily conflicts with OP's interpretation.
wauwy: (sulu)

[personal profile] wauwy 2013-02-15 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
I never bought their romance. They just felt like Decker and Ilia 2.0 to me, which they were, and stank of Roddenberry's crummy way of writing relationships.

Troi/Worf had much more chemistry, IMO.

I'm sure I know who the OP is.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe you have made four TNG secrets, OP. When I talk to you about this in real-life you deny it, but I'm sure I know who you are.

Also Saturday night is good for me, I'll see you then.
