What do you count as sex?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Some friends and I were discussing what counts towards one's sexual "number". One person insisted it was only penis in vagina that counted, but that's ridiculously heteronormative. Another said that so long as there was penetration in a hole it counted. But what about girl/girl?

Does oral count? Does fingering count?

Not that a person's number should mean anything, it's more that I wonder how people in general actually count theirs.

Orgasms with other people?

I definitely don't think there needs to be penetration for it to "count".

But there aren't always orgasms.

Hence the unsure question mark.

Though I'd suggest that sex is the act of working towards and/or achieving orgasms, and if orgasms aren't in the picture it might be labelled as something else. Unsure though.

That makes sense to me, except maybe in the case of those who have a history of difficulty reaching orgasm and might just aim for enjoyment instead. But in general, that's probably apt.

Any activity intended towards orgasm between two or more people I guess.

I had a big debate about this last week and we never quite settled the issue. The definition I like most, that is the most inclusive, is "activity with mutual intent for one or more parties to have a consensual orgasm." But almost everyone I talked to said that that was way too open.

Re: What do you count as sex?

That's probably the definition I would use. If an activity can potentially lead to orgasm, I don't see how it can be written off as pure foreplay. Fingering, for example, can be used as such, but it can also stand on its own, so I don't see why it shouldn't count.

If it gets you arrested for doing it in the middle of a playground, I think it should count as sex.

I think I love you.

But wait, what if you're just masturbating? Should we specify a minimum number of participants?

Re: What do you count as sex?

I was thinking the same thing. I guess it's still a sexual act if you're masturbating, but it doesn't matter much without a partner. So I'd say 2+ participants.

Or maximum? At some point it stops becoming an illegal orgy and becomes performance art.

LMAO but that could be just playing checkers naked.

I'd count anything that involves touching another person's genitals with the intention of getting them off. So, yes, oral and fingering both count.

From what I learned, sex is any skin on skin contact with at least one set of genitals, so vaginal, anal, oral, and frottage all count.

Doesn't count masturbation, though.

My definition tends to be "If you had an orgasm and somebody else helped (outside of fantasy), you had sex." Just because there's no penetration doesn't mean it wasn't a sexual encounter.

"If you had an orgasm and somebody else helped (outside of fantasy), you had sex"

- for some reason I read that in Jeff Foxworthy's voice when he's making those "you might be a redneck" jokes. :)

Its kind of a cop out answer but... "Whatever the participants define as sex."

There are lots of things (oral sex, masturbation, fingering, kissing, boob/foot/hand jobs, frottage, fetish stuff, etc.) that are sex acts, but most people don't consider them to be "Sex" on their own. Sort of an 'a square is a rectangle, a rectangle is not a square' situation.

Dictionary says it involves 'sexual intercourse', which includes penetration. So if you want to be technical, that.

If you don't, whatever you think counts. I count Eskimo kisses.

None of the following points is sufficient by itself, but none of them is necessary either. The more of them are present, the likelier I am to count the thing as sex:

#1 It can make you orgasm
#2 It brings intense pleasure
#3 Two or more people are involved
#4 You think of it as sex
#5 Genitals are involved
#6 Doing it while others could see you would feel at least a little bit weird, wrong or kinky
#7 There are whole categories of people, e.g. relatives, that you just wouldn't do it with

(In no particular order, except maybe a little.)

Re: What do you count as sex?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
i really define it as penetration, but maybe that's just cause of what i've been taught. i guess though because i'm a straight female i've always associated sex as something that could get me pregnant provided there was no protection. obviously because there are all sorts and various sexual orientations, my definition is very 'me' biased.

If both of us get completely naked or close to naked, and/or there is penetration I count it as sex...

Or alternatively, if I felt I had sex I had sex, but that is an rather subjective way of thinking so hard to describe?
