Pairings you like but don't ship

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
So, it IS possible to enjoy a fictional romance without wanting the characters to get together as endgame, or to really enjoy a romantic storyline even while you're shipping the characters with other people, right?

Anyone wanna put down some examples? Me, I have so much love for Ted and Robin's UST, romantic relationship, breakup, learning how to become friends, and then being great stable friends in seasons 1-4 of How I Met Your Mother, even though I never for a single minute wanted them to stay together forever. I just thought their shared story and the evolution of their relationship, romance included, was just really endearing and well-characterized, even though I knew they were totally wrong for each other in the long run (mind you, this is ONLY in seasons 1-4).

I am unsure of the question. But using your example: Bones/Booth and House/Cuddy. The shows were so much better when they were not actually together.

For Supernatural, I sometimes say I ship Dean/Gabriel, but I don't as endgame or anything. While I think they'd have a great relationship, I still ... ship Dean/Castiel with my soul.

I didn't ship Doctor/Rose in Doctor Who, certainly never wanted them to be together forever or to have a stable romantic relationship, but I thought the idea of the Doctor falling in love with a companion was a really great narrative choice and I loved the depiction of the relationship. I gotta say that it didn't end quite the way I was hoping for, but all the same I'm really glad the storyline existed.

My feelings on their relationship are more or less exactly the same as yours.

Oh yes, totally. You don't have to want the characters to be together forever and ever to like them individually, or to like their interactions with each other, or to like how the relationship allows for character or plot development. Off the top of my head, I really liked Jess' relationship with Sam (and in fact, all of Jess' boyfriends) in New Girl, even though I knew it wasn't going to be endgame. (Still not sold on Jess/Nick as endgame, but that's another kettle of fish.)

I'm actively disappointed that Jess/Sam isn't endgame. That dude is great. :( Although I did also like her other boyfriend whose name I forget, the Justin Long character.

I am not AT ALL sold on Nick/Jess. She can do better.

I am secretly hoping for a Jess/Justin Long character surprise endgame. That dude was perfect for her.

I am not looking forward to watching more Nick/Jess. I just finished the first season.

Sam was kind of amazing, wasn't he? Though my love for him did cool off a bit once he and Jess were officially together, but I think it was written that way on purpose... to make Nick seem better, ugh! I absolutely love Nick's character, and I also absolutely love Nick and Jess' friendship (it made me stupidly happy that Jess made a pretend Nick to talk to the night they left her alone), but really, Nick is way too much of a screw up atm to be with anyone, let alone Jess. The way he didn't take responsibility for the kiss just confirmed it for me, and also was really annoying.

Ugh, exactly. I agree with everything you've said (except that I don't really love Nick by himself either, although he's growing on me). I would be thrilled with them staying friends, but he's nowhere near appropriate for her, and the ship-pushing on the writers' part annoys me.

Gossip Girl is an embarrassing example, but it's one that had a vast array of pairings, and I enjoyed a number of them as they played out without feeling any upset when they inevitably combusted.

Jack Harkness/the original Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood. Most wonderful little one-evening, one-dance, one-kiss romantic affair in existence. Perfect the way it is, don't want anything more.

Xander/Cordelia in Buffy. I love that the relationship existed, even though I don't ship it at all.

re: HIMYM. It's tantamount to the characters that the rainstorm in "Come On" was as amazing and thrilling as it would have been for an endgame couple despite everyone in the audience knowing full well Robin wasn't the mother. Damn, that show used to be good. What the hell happened to it?

Anyway, I really liked Data and Tasha Yar's fling in Star Trek TNG. Never wanted them to be together for a minute, but the fact that it happened is just so great.

Pretty much any couple in Harry Potter. I suppose I'm not really invested in any of the canon couples? Even though I saw some of them coming a mile off, it was more of a 'oh, okay, sure' reaction.

Particular mention goes to Remus/Tonks though, since I was cool with that and thought it was kinda neat at times despite shipping Wolfstar.

Archie Hicox/Bridget von Hammersmark.

Their interactions were cute and friends of mine have written some very good fic for them, but I just can't ship it. I seem to be able to ship Bridget with everyone else in that cast of characters in IB, but not Archie.
