That sounds like an awful Valentine's Day, I'm sorry :( As someone who spent their's with their father in hospital, I can relate to the first part (Valentine's day was yesterday in my country). As for your fandom friend, she might not want to talk on the phone right now or might be busy with her family, but I would definitely send her an email saying you're there for her can talk to her on the phone if she wants, and maybe try to ring again in a few hours if she doesn't reply. As for when she picks up, you can say you're sorry to hear the news, and that you're there for her, and ask her how she's holding up, and let her talk if she wants. Listen to her and think about suggesting a counselor if she sounds unstable. But like the anon above said, I think the very fact you've cared enough to call should mean a lot to her.
