I know this is a long shot, but I wonder if this book sounds familiar to any of you? I'd love to find it again.

The protagonists were children whose family had recently moved into an old house in the southern U.S. The house was haunted by the ghost of a woman who had been a slave there before the Civil War. IIRC, she had nursed the master's family, especially the children, through an epidemic, but her own children died of the sickness while she was unable to get away and care for them, and she died afterward of grief. Ever since then, people could hear her climbing the creaky old stairs, and the sloshing of the pails of water she carried to bathe the sick people. I don't remember whether she was a vengeful spirit or not, but I think that laying her ghost was the main theme of the story.
