So consuming way too much thriller, action, action/thriller media got my sluggish brain wondering something.

It's pretty much a codified trope that most Western action-y heroes have some kind of crappy upbringing. And since most action heroes tend to be cops, soldiers, criminals, and stuff like that, this draws a few interesting parallels.

I mean, I'm someone who's drawn to that kind of job field (minus criminal, ha), and I also quite enjoy action heroes, especially when their background is kind of terrible. It makes me relate to them, because my background sounds honestly kind of like something out of a soap opera.

And then I came across an article on /k/, in one of their rare moments of lucidity and self-awareness, and it sort of made a lot of fucked up sense.

So I ask you guys: how many of you have certifiably shitty backgrounds/upbringing, and similarly want to get into some kind of field that involves further danger to yourself?

My parents were very thoughtful and warm and stable, and that's why I grew up to be an accountant.

I had a shitty upbringing, and I worked my ass off in school so I could get get a full-ride scholarship and leave my situation. It helped that I was the youngest child, though, and that full-ride scholarships were still a more common thing back then.

So: my shitty background led to me becoming an engineer.

Civil Structures. :) I work in the bridge department of my state's transportation department.

I would have loved to join the military, but I got sick and no it isn't an option any more. But I am pretty sure that was because of my shitty upbringing.

Instead I will go into the field of television which isn't a dangerous job, but a seriously unstable one.

I had a very average and boring upbringing. I overcame it by joining the Army.

Maybe it's because it's very early and I'm still sleepy but this made me giggle for like 5 minutes straight
