Yep. Really, them's the close family member and friends rule. I can vent about how shitty and terrible my brothers/mom/dad/SO are being, but you'd better not say anything similarly disparaging.

that doesn't make any sense. if someone sees my mom being a bitch to me, i'd be the exact opposite of offended if they came up to me and said "wow, your mom's awful" or something. i'd feel comforted, sympathized with. i don't understand in the least why anyone wouldn't want that.

I'm the same way. My partner and I bitch about how all of our parental units have been shitty to us. It's cathartic to commiserate about a shitty situation, especially when the rest of the world is trying to scream "BUT FAAAAAAAMBLY" at us, like it makes it any better that it's our parents pulling crap on us instead of a friend or random stranger. My partner, especially, takes great comfort when I call his mom out for the bullshit she pulls, because he grew up rather brainwashed into believing that everything she said and did was right, just, and for his own benefit, so he has a hard time looking at the situation objectively unless he's got somebody there telling him what he's thinking and feeling is valid and justified.

I mean, I used to defend my mom, but then she kicked me out of the house for having gay erotica when I was 18, so fuck that noise.

Heh. It's kind of hard to explain. Other people might not react the same obviously. It's like, yeah maybe my mom is being a bitch now, but you don't know her so you don't get to talk about her like you do. It's a protective thing.
