I think it depends how you do it. From an outside perspective, it seems like the older fans in bandom/rpf see themselves as "fannish" rather than simply "fans". They do things that we associate with fandom like art, fic, meta, icons, squeeing and do it in a fannish sphere.
I think that distinction is kind of dying with the advent of tumblr though, so we'll see what happens. I've been following some of the 1D fandom drama from a distance, so I've been reading about this. I think a lot of the girls in middle school would have been fannish, though. It's just that not all of us outgrow it :D
