It's pretty fucked up, but at this point the damage is done. As you have correctly surmised, you needed to get out, and anything you do now will at best have the risk of sucking you back in.

is this hillary duff?

I can't decide if this is the best misfire ever or the worst misfire ever.

THIS IS SPARTA!

Do you have one fandom friend/acquaintance you trust? Could you contact that person and ask that they pass on the info that you are okay? Doesn't have to be all Big Drama but when I've had on-line friends disappear, I found it extremely disconcerting. I do worry.

I'm glad you made the decision that was best for you. Taking care of you is your only priority, really!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I had a fandom friend a couple of years back do the same thing you did. I do still wonder what happened to her sometimes, but I figured she did for her own benefit and that's perfectly okay.

So don't feel bad about it, OP, I'm glad that things are going well for you. I hope you've found a more fun enjoyable and less toxic place to spend your time. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
It may or may not be me, but in case it is, I'm okay and I'm sorry.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay! :)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
You have to look after yourself. It's okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
This is kind of ridiculous. You have every right to delete your online presence without have to warn or get anyone else's permission. Jesus fucking Christ are people that far gone that your internet life is more important than your real one?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
No. Some of us actually form REAL friendships and come to care deeply for people we meet on the internet. Often once that happens we make an effort to meet irl, but even not, that doesn't invalidate a single bit of the friendship It doesn't mean that we don't have a life outside the internet, it doesn't mean that we have no friends outside of the internet. It doesn't mean that we're socially incapable losers. It means that we met some of our friends at school, some of our friends through extra curriculars or whatever, some of our friends on the internet, hell maybe we met someone on a bus and started talking to them and befriended them. NONE OF THESE FRIENDSHIPS ARE ANY MORE OR LESS REAL THAN THE OTHER.

So yes, if one of our friends whose only way of contact is the internet suddenly deletes EVERYTHING and falls of the face of the earth, that is horrible.

Think about it. Say you had a friend in another country. You talk on the phone a few times a week, you exchange letters... And then suddenly you call your friend and you hear the phone line's been disconnected. You try sending letters but you never get a response or you get a return to sender and you have no other possibility of contacting your friend. Would that make you worry? I sure fucking hope so.

THIS. I've interacted with many people on LJ and Twitter and over the years, some of them left without saying a word. I never made it a big deal because even though we talked, I wouldn't call them "my friends" But there are other people whom I'm very close with, we talk to each other about anything in our lives (offline/online), we communicate evey freaking day. I'm sure I would be worried like hell if they left without saying a word.

Well, one of them did and I found out that he was killed in a car accident. So yeah...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This. One of my friends did that and I later found out they had a mental breakdown.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, PLEASE, PLEASE let them know that you're alright that you didn't kill yourself. Even if it's the last thing you ever say to them. You have NO IDEA the damage you can do to someone letting them believe that something happened to you.

I'm sorry you had drama and that maybe your friends didn't make you feel well, but please be aware that just dropping them like that and possibly making them believe that you did kill yourself or harm yourself in any other way has every ability to send any of them down exactly the same dark spiral.

Chances are big some of them still care about you and it would be horrible to leave them in that belief.

Regards,

someone who's been hurt badly by (fandom) friends pulling that kind of stuff.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
If these 'friends' were making you feel that bad, then why are you so worried about their widdle fee-fees?

You really did the best thing. If they had no other way to contact you, and apparently made no effort to find out what had happened to you when you disappeared, then clearly you were not that close.

(And for those of you sputtering 'Butbutbut Internet friendships can become FOR REALZIES!'--this is true, but if those Internet friendships have not advanced to the level of a point of contact beyond the fandom space, such as a phone number, mailing address or, hey, maybe an EMAIL ADDRESS, then I question how deep those friendships really are.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
well, maybe it's just me then who would still feel worried and horrible about thinking that that person might have really come to some harm. You seem to not be able to understand that friends (on any level of interaction) can have drama and fight but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't care for each other.

I myself have friends with whom I've had drama and arguments and friends with whom I've never fought a day we've known each other. And I love ALL of them.

There was this person I talked to on and off for about three years. No we never exchanged email addresses or were even friends. We were in the same fandom and commented on each others' journal once in a while. I know she was in bad health for all her life and getting worse for a while. She disappeared off the face of the earth one day. Once I realised there's a possibility she might have died, yeah, you bet I felt horrible and sad about it for a long while and it still gives me a pang.

So sorry if some of us don't have a convenient on/off switch for our emotions. Believe me, I'd love to have the ability to just cut people out of my life and never worry about them or have any kind of feeling for them again, be it good or bad.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
idk dude, you're still making fandom secrets. So, you've still got a toe in the water and it seems like it would be healthy for you to have some closure. just reach out to a couple of them through an anon comment and fill them in on where you're at.
