Your reward for curing the madness of Sheogorath is to become the mad god Sheogorath? Kind a downer really. Albeit one you can be chipper about.

Is it depressing? Madness ain't all bad, that's a big part of the plot. The saddest part is what curing Sheogorath meant he became, really.

Oh I get that, and it was a great storyline! But the loss of self at the end seems rather bleak to me.

I definitely see what you mean, it could be looked at pretty bleakly too! I think for me it was kinda like, you always had the madness in you, that was why you could go there and succeed through the questline, and the story near the end was about accepting that madness and letting it become a force for good - that it was there and always would be, but that it didn't have to be a bad thing, that it could actually give you strength. And I also just really liked, in the last quest or two once Sheogorath has to leave, how you get told that there's no point, that there's nothing you can do and you and the city are going to fall, that you've done well and bravely up until now but it's for nothing in the end - and then you go out there and win, goddamit, you look at that situation and go out with blind raging defiance in the face of overwhelming odds, and you actually succeed! So yeah, I just got out of it as a metaphor:
- Your illnesses may always be there but they don't have to ruin your life, and they can be a source of inspiration and a sort of strange beauty too, and
- You do have the strength and ability to fight the really bad aspects of them off, it isn't inevitable that they'll kill you
