anime with great dubs

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-02-16 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by a secret from a couple of days ago, what are some anime series with great dubs? I usually watch subs because lazy dubs drive me up a wall, but I like to watch tv while crocheting so I can't really read subtitles at the same time. Some dubs that I have already watched and enjoyed are Cowboy Bepop, Code Geass, Gundam series... what are some other good dubs?

Baccano! It has sort of an early 20th-century mob theme, and the English dub has some really good use of period lingo/regional accents. I like it so much, even though I didn't care for the show itself. :)

Last Exile has a pretty good dub, I liked FLCL, and I thought Witch Hunter Robin was ok. I haven't really watched too much dubbed anime lately.

El Hazard.

Samurai Pizza Cats, but that wasn't a dub so much as "we can't even find the script, lets just make up whatever the fuck" and what they made up was BEAUTIFUL.

I always enjoyed watching Trigun in English.

Soul Eater and Fruits Basket.

+1 Soul Eater. I usually prefer subs but I liked the Soul Eater dub more.

+1 Fruits Basket and what I've seen of Soul Eater has been decent.

Death Note has a pretty good dub. I was surprised by that when I started watching it, as it would've been so easy to make incredibly silly in places.

Personally I thought Lucky Star's dub was really good. Granted, it's one of the few dubs I've actually watched, but seeing as I actually watched it ... that's saying something :P

Seconding Baccano!, and I think Ouran High School Host Club's was pretty good, too.

Fullmetal Alchemist and FMA: Brotherhood. They have the same actors but deviating storylines.

And seconding Death Note. Some scenes in that are just... jeez. You know?

Yeah, I really love the FMA dubs, especially because they put in enough effort to not just recapture the actual dialogue but also the general performance of the Japanese VAs.

I liked Rurouni Kenshin's dub...

Me too! Mmm, Rurouni Kenshin.

Also OP, I quite liked Saiyuki's main cast. (For the first series anyway. After that the cast changed and it wasn't the same.)

Ah Saiyuki, the best show about four hot guys going nowhere. Also one of the few series I like Vic in.

I second Kenshin as well. Stop after the Kyoto Arc though or watch the filler in spurts. It's easier that way.

Thirding Baccano! And okay, I enjoy most dubs, but another recent one that stands out to me is Deadman Wonderland.

Hetalia! I tried watching the sub a while back, didn't like it. I Youtube-whirpooled myself to a dubbed episode a few weeks ago, and ended up watching the entire series up to the latest season.

Latinoamerican Spanish dubs tend to be pretty good or at least decent, actually.

(Except when they do the super high-pitched girly voices like that blonde girl in Tokyo Mew Mew, or super cartoonish, exaggerated voices, but that might be just me, given that those are more or less the same in Japanese, if not worse!)

This will be long and mostly older series. You have been warned.

Fruits Baskets
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Martian Successor Nadessco
Full Metal Panic
Those who hunt elves
Witch Hunter Robin
Slayers
Kenshin stop at the Kyoto arc or watch the filler in spurts.
Kiddy Grade
Noir the beginning is boring but it does pick up.
Trigun
Outlaw Star
Blue Seed
Bubblegum Crisis 2040 little weird, good series and I like the voice acting
Utena watch the series before the movie. You might be able to make sense of it then.
Fushigi Yuugi
Saiyuki
Black Blood Brothers
Baccano
Soul Eater
