...how much rape do you need, exactly? The fact that there are dozens, even hundreds of articles on the rape that happens in ASoIaF is a pretty big clue that quite a few people consider it too much.

Not really. There are plenty of websites about all sorts of things that rational people don't consider a problem.

'All the rape' is a couple of events that don't happen 'onscreen,' unlike attempted child murder, torture, etc. that no one ever talks about. The purpose is to show this place is in the Dark Ages no matter how spiffy things seem at Winterfell in the beginning.

The fall of the king overturned a lot of rocks where all sorts of terrible things crawled out and did horrible things. Every scene like that is made to freak out a different type of reader. Just because you have a reaction to something doesn't always mean there's 'a lot' of it in the book. It just means it pushed a button. It was supposed to.

Uh, what? There are rape scenes on the page. There are multiple rape scenes in the Dothraki storyline alone in book 1, IIRC. Dany's storyline is ambiguous at best as well.

There's also at least one semi-explicit rape scene added to the TV series, but that's a separate argument, I suppose.

I forgot about the pillaging scene! And it was so important, too! Duh!

Illeryo's comment about having guards at Dany's door at night to keep Viserys from raping her made me wonder what happened to get that guard posted.

I hope they don't show the Tasha scene as a flashback. If they do, I understand why it's important to the plot, but I'll probably choose that time to go get popcorn or go to the bathroom. Gah!

Illeryo's comment about having guards at Dany's door at night to keep Viserys from raping her made me wonder what happened to get that guard posted.

I haven't read book five since it came out, but IIRC it became pretty clear that Viserys would have tried it at some point. Dany/Drogo is also... pretty borderline, even though she ultimately says yes to him. And their wedding scene is also rapetastic, not just for their scene but also the guests.

Personally, it's not so much a matter of how much exactly, as of it being part of a much wider threat. Reading the books, I remember being creeped out by the ambience of constant violence and threats of violence, but the sexual violence was just a part of it. I'm surprised that people make so much of the rapes while being apparently cool with all the other kinds violence depicted in the books/show.
