I think it really depends on the context and the characters. Not every fic with sex in it is about porn. And some characters just seem the type to actually want to use condoms in some situations.

i kind of agree with this. i'm not a huge fan of condoms in fics, because it is all about the fantasy, but in some cases you have to include them for it to be plausible enough to get into. it's not on the same level as lube (which i cannot accept characters not using unless the point is to include a hell of a lot of pain), but if the characters or situation demands condoms for verisimilitude, then i want those condoms to be there.
