...hi, I'm a massive lurker, but languages are cool, I like languages. Especially when we go into the field of linguistics, even though my knowledge of that is very limited. What language are you studying, if you don't mind me asking?

ANYWAY

Portuguese is my native language but I grew up in a bilingual household, so I consider English to be my native language, too. Apparently you can't do that, though??

I'm a linguist (no, seriously. I'm studying Linguistics.) <3

well, if you grew up bilingual, you can and DO have two native languages? I think?

I'm currently not studying any languages (some Catalan on the side, but nothing serious with classes and stuff) :(

Ahhh, that's so cool! I'm currently taken a syntax course, and as crazy as it is, I love it. I took morphosyntax before that, but we mostly focuses on morphology. I gotta admit, I kinda like that a bit more than syntax, though. What field are you studying? Or is it just general? I'm sorry for all of the questions.T_T

And apparently you can have more than one native language! The user immediately below posted something about sequential and simultaneous bilingualism.

It's okay, if you don't know how to ask, then I don't how to spell. I was appalled to see the number of typos I made up-thread. DDD:

I'm currently studying Spanish syntax. It's an elementary level course, because unfortunately my university's language department shafted its students out of a linguistics track. Hence, my incredibly limited knowledge about the field as a whole. It's a disservice, really. Not only is linguistics interesting (from what I can tell, at least), but from what I've heard it also has very practical applications.

are you drawing trees? \o/

the only things you need to know about the fields can be read from this :D (note: I don't really like math. and I really like funny symbols. if I went by this chart, I'd end up in CompLing -- which was my initial career plan, actually)

Yes! I HATED the little bastards at first (mostly it because it was a knee-jerk reaction in the vein of "Wtf is this bullshit"), but now that I got the hang of it, I find them oddly relaxing. We're doing simple stuff, though, like "Mary bought pears" and "Louis sent a letter to Peter," but I feel like more advanced stuff can't be THAT bad.

That chart is awesome, and I wish I had found it four years ago. I feel like I'd end up doing either historical linguistics or pragmatics.

No, you most definitely can. It's called simultaneous bilingualism, since you were raised before the age of 2 speaking both languages.

I have what you call sequential bilingualism, since I started learning French at age 7 or 8.

Oh gosh, FRENCH. I'm currently learning it, and I have such a love-hate relationship with it. Mostly it's me loving the language, and the language hating me in return. One day...!

Also, thank you for the terms! I'm looking up more information about them right now.

No problem! I love French. It's got some damn passion behind that language.
