Ngl I was pretty disappointed when I poked my head in to check out some gaming fandom fic and it was all OCs and nothing to do with canon characters or the rich history within that universe. I don't begrudge people their fun, but I still wish there was more stories with the canon cast.

*same* If people have fun writing OC/PC, good for them. After all, no one forces me to read it.

The only time the putrid splatter of brown OC-rrhea will really annoy me is if it bloats the archive numbers for the fandom so high that the fandom becomes ineligible for Yuletide.

(And hell yes I'm posting as anon. I have friends who write OCs. I don't need for them to know how I really feel about the crap they upload.

I find a lot of PC centered fic and even rpg boring. But my YMMV boring=/=bad. I'm cool with whatever my friends post even if I don't read a lot of it.

The only stinking putresence I see is judgement of those who lose sight of the purpose of having fun.

Admittedly the only one of these fandoms I'm in is Elder Scrolls, but the vast majority of fic I see is for canon characters, often set in time periods that aren't even covered by the games (like the Alessian Rebellion or the Velothi Exodus for Elder Scrolls, for example). I don't know where you people are going that you only see OCs.

I was talking more general gaming, not really specifically the two games in the secret. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Maybe you could post where you find your fic for the people looking for canon characters and times?

Sure :) The fic I was talking about I generally find on the official Elder Scrolls forums; they have a subforum for fan creations. A lot of the people there have a keen interest in lore, so there's a lot of lore-based fic around, particularly if you delve into the archive and look at some of the earlier works. Indulgent Mary Sues/ Gary Stus are usually called out, albeit in a nice way.

And I know a lot of people deride ff.net, but many older users use it as an archive, and there is some amazing fiction in the older reaches. This user in particular makes an effort to write in a style as closely reminiscent of the in-game books as possible:
