Romance Recs

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hey f!s, I've been dipping my toes into the romance genre. The latest book I read I ended up throwing against a wall because the hero was a manipulative rapist, and I was somehow expected to find Stockholm Syndrome to be romantic just because the hero is "sexy".

SO. If you're a romance reader, and you know of any books with heroes who are good people who don't try to control the heroine, please recommend some!

"Angelfall" by Susan Ee. It's not a romance book per say, but it does have very strong romance elements to it. It's a dystopian novel about a girl who meets and angel during a angel vs. human war (wow I suck at synopsis). It's not a bodice ripper, but the heroine is strong and capable on her own.

I also like Kelley Armstrong's urban fantasy series "Women of the Otherworld". They are heavy on plot, but they do have lots of romance weaved in through them all.

For legit straight romance (okay comedic-romance) I liked "The Shopaholic" series. Cute and fun reads. I also enjoyed "The Brightest Star in the Sky" by Marian Keyes. "Shoes Addicts Anonymous" by Beth Harbison was another fun light read.

For more straight romance, there is "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon (the first one at least). The women at my work loved that one. I'm still not sure about my feelings on it tho. The Viking series by Sandra Hill I've heard is okay as well.

What genre of romance? Historical, modern, something else?

My favorite is probably Jennifer Crusie - Welcome to Temptation, Fast Women, Faking It, Bet Me, Crazy for You, Tell Me Lies - all good.

Seconding Jennifer Crusie, especially Fast Women and Bet Me. Most people I've loaned her books to tend to like Faking It the best, but I personally found it a little convuluted.

Also, there's a trilogy by Julie Ortolon that I really enjoyed--The Pearl Island Trilogy.

(I'll never understand why romances tend to come in trilogies.)

Contemporary, suspense/thriller/mystery, fantasy, sci-fi, urban fantasy/paranormal. I'm a bit iffy on historicals, unless they're really good.

Basically, I just want something fluffy and adorable, as opposed to rape-y.

Try Jennifer Crusie.

Judith Ivory's good, too, for historicals.

Don't read too much romance for similar reasons, but I rather liked "Goddess of Spring" by PC Cast.

Also Smart Bitches, Trashy Books (http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/) has some pretty awesome reviews.
