MLP:FiM thoughts (Spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Two things I've noticed in the days following the finale, and they're as follows: The intended audience for the show loved it. The adults hate it.

There seems to be a growing number of (adults) who want to have the show changed, all because it didn't meet their 'mature' adult tastes. And I'm just really amused that these people are so dumbstruck by the fact that MLP is a show aimed at young girls to sell toys. I've watched the first two seasons, the 'holy grail' if it were. They weren't that amazing. Honestly, they were pretty bland. The messages were very simple, and the only 'mature' themes I saw were the random adult jokes thrown in here and there. And you know what? I think that's great! It's not a bad show for young children to watch.

Season three, though. The adult fans just lost their minds, and I'm so confused as to why. It seems to me that they were really under the impression that MLP wasn't a show about magical talking colored ponies. The amount of hate thrown at the writers because of this is just insane, in my opinion. Larson and McCarthy seem to be taking it in stride, but I just feel so bad for them. I doubt I could handle that amount of adult fans screaming at me that the young girl's show I was hired to work for wasn't living up to a high adult standard.

And I don't think there's anything wrong with liking the show! That's totally fine. But I think a lot of these fans need to realize what kind of show they're watching and accept it for what it is, or just move on to an actual adult show. They are never going to be the intended audience.

The show will probably survive with it's target audioence just fine. But it was a family show before. Now it's a kids show. THere is a difference.

Mainly, when those kids grow up, they will remember this less fondly if they ever see an episode again.

I don't think one episode destroys what the rest of the show was.

I love how the show was the height of greatness for little girls before, and now that Twilight is an alicorn princess the male fans declare it's all gone to pot. It is now a blight on the little girl animated market!

Come on guys, you're making fools of yourselves.

That's a symptom. I find the excessive songs and horrible pacing a far larger problem.

That's what I thought till I watched an episode of the old ninja turtles again.

I find the sheer hatred baffling too.

The primary audience is children. It's okay to like things for children. vOv

Also, I couldn't even watch this entire third season. :( The last episode I could watch was... the one with Scootaloo and the camping trip, I think? I read recaps for everything else and I still don't regret not watching.

I mean, besides from the season opening and the season ending, I found each and every episode I did watch incredibly dull. At least with season 1 and 2, even if I didn't like the episode, I didn't feel like I wanted those 22 minutes of my life back, but I sure did with the episodes I watched of the third season.

Maybe I am too much in touch with my inner child. IDK. OTL

But, yeah, Alicorn!Twilight! :D Princesses!

It's like they don't realize that becoming too popular with a periphery demographic can be a franchise killer. Even with shows that aren't explicitly designed to support a toy line, it's not uncommon for a series to get canned or meddled with because the advertisers are reaching too many people outside the target demographic.

And before some brony barges in with how much they support Hasbro by buying FiM products: How much do you support other Hasbro products? How much do you watch other Hub shows? How much do you buy the sorts of products advertized during the commercial breaks? Unless your buying patterns resemble those of a little girl (or the parents therof) in more than just colorful plastic horses, it's better for business that the target audience outnumbers and is favored over you.

The rage coming off of the adult male fans is really scary. CR used to be my favorite reviewer on TGWTG, since he seemed so level headed and thorough. Now he's become nothing both a frothing manchild who posts tweet after tweet about how Hasbro has ruined his wonderful pony show. He's even planning on doing an anti-FiM video. I get so much secondhand embarrassment from watching him now.
