Re: so what classics do people like?

Jane Austen. Wuthering Heights. The Three Musketeers (working on Count of Monte Cristo but it is slower going). Gone With the Wind. The Shakespearean tragedies, with particular emphasis on Macbeth, Othello, and Measure for Measure (okay, the last is one of the "dark" comedies but still, it is awesome and I wish I knew more people who loved it). The Great Gatsby. Alice in Wonderland. Pale Fire. Frankenstein. The Picture of Dorian Grey.

Probably others I am forgetting. There is, admittedly, an equally long list of classics I do not like, with Hard Times sitting on top of it since that one single-highhandedly led to me not finishing any other Dickens in university.

Also, I would say a few decades need to pass to see if a book can still stick around but beyond that, age doesn't really matter.
