Sherlock is a Brit living in America

He's originally British and even worked with Scotland Yard before his drug abuse became too great. He goes into treatment, I believe in America (or he did one course there and then another here as Watson does visit a rehab to find out more about him), and then comes/stays in America due to the show's police captain who he had worked with before (for a case that took the man to England) and basically worked with him since he hadn't, at the time, known about Sherlock's drug issues.

Its implied he's been in America for awhile though so he's assimilated and considering how different Holmes can be he has his quirks so its not like he would have ever been stereotypically British.
