Subverted expectations of a show...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever gone into a show with certain preconceived notions of what it would be like, only to have those expectations completely turned on their heads?

I don't just mean "I thought this show would suck but it didn't" or vice versa, I also mean, you expected a certain type of story, atmosphere, tone, cast of characters, message, style, level of seriousness/campiness, etc.

Not a show, but I thought that Silver Linings Playbook was about a young widow (Jennifer Lawrence) becoming best friends/platonic lovers with embittered Robert de Niro. Then I saw the trailer...

Similarly, when I first got wind of Being Human, I thought George Sands was a woman. Because of George Sand, the writer.

Supernatural. I watched from the Pilot, and I thought it'd be a serious scary/horror type thing (the first episode certainly scared me), focusing mainly on ghosts.

Then it became all emotional brothers, angsty relationships, with hilarious moments thrown in for good measure. And I love that it isn't what I thought it'd be, to be honest.

I expected Madoka to be darker than it was initially. Upon reflection, it is pretty sad, just...for the first nine episodes it wasn't as gut wrenching as I had been told. It's definitely not bad though.

I had written The Last Airbender off as an anime. Not sure why I condemned the entire genre like that or how that was even a judgement, but still.

My little pony surprised me since it's not all frilly ponies frolicking around as I imagined.

Not a show, but The Stars' Tennis Balls by Stephen Fry blew my mind. (spoilers) It starts out like a book that's about a romance and a guy coping with crippling self-esteem, then suddenly, BAM, it turns all thriller and bamf-y on you (/spoilers) Love that book so much, man.

I've been curious about his books. Good to know you recommend that one!

If Doctor Who audios count, I'd say Doctor Who and the Pirates. I'd heard several people describe it purely in terms of the Gilbert and Sullivan parody musical episode, and I expected pure cracky nonsense. And it starts like that but then suddenly you get to the actual point of the story and it's not at all. Excellent story, but not what I'd expected, and I'd say that's very much what the author intended.

Les mis.

I had heard a few of the songs and some vague things things. Never in a proper order though. So for some reason I was expecting 'I dreamed a dream' to come after the revolution (like one of the revolution survivors or something???) and just a bunch of weird assumptions from hearing too many things out of context.

Haha, I was the same way.

Madoka spoilers

This is more like subverted expectations of one character, but - based on what I'd seen from the fandom, I went into Madoka expecting Kyuubey to be outright evil and devious. I was (pleasantly) surprised when he turned out to just be extremely alien.

Based on how it was described by the person who introduced me to it, I went into Strawberry Panic expecting fluff.

What I got was hilarious levels of melodrama. Then I got the manga and light novels, and it was even more deliciously ridiculous.

Oh! And speaking of light novels...

After playing a few of the MegaTen games, I tracked down translations of the first two light novels. I never ended up reading the second one, because the first was...very much not what I was expecting. And not in a good way.

I mean, it had the whole 'computer-assisted demon summoning' and it explained the 'goddess resurrection' title, but...one of the two protagonists is a villain through most of it, with an entirely unconvincing heel face turn 3/4 of the way through. And there is SO DAMN MUCH RAPE.... (Well, honestly, thinking about it, there actually isn't a whole lot of rape - but there are at least 2 completed rapes, and a threat to the female protagonist, and the male protagonist was involved in the completed ones (the female protagonist's near rape is what prompts his FHT), so it feels like more.)
