I'm holding out for Each Usige.
Really? Interesting. When I first read this my mind went to "how" considering how vicious they are. But then again, a lot of the creatures we romanticize are, in fact, predators too so... it can be done. How, exactly, are you hoping for them to be romanticized? (I'm just interested.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)There's an older short story by John Masefield called The Seal Man in the collection A Mainsail Haul that has an edition on Google Books in its entirety (comically large link since not all the editions are available):
http://books.google.com/books?id=qipXAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false
It's got a touch of the old-timey casual racism, but there's some haunting bits in there, and about a dozen lines were turned into a short solo vocal piece in 1922 that come up in Google.
And while I'm nayrt, for Each-Usige, I imagine something could be done with the idea of an angsty teen who will think things like, "must restrain myself from secreting stickiness in the presence of such a naive but enchanting girl who sometimes I think secretly wants to be taken to my place to be devoured". Or the usual "this girl is just too super-special to do the usual unspeakables to", but the only way I can think of making her soooper special is maybe she has something that gives her jaundice which magically makes her taste too much like liver OH and also it means she doesn't even have long to live ANYWAY, so might as well go out adhered to the back of the man she loves. Or something.

The jaundice thing made me laugh. I think I would read it just for that. Personally, I'm always interested in beings that go against their nature. (You know, as long as it's done well.) I'm not sure why though. I guess I find internal turmoil and struggle interesting.
