If you're just reading someone's profile on a site where they've friended you and/or put it up publicly that's not a problem. In fact I wish *more* people would do that - I'm frequently misgendered on a site where I list my gender on my profile and it's *right there* under my name and it's super easy for people to click on profiles and view that info without even leaving the window they're in. That's the REASON I listed it. And that's also why I wish profiles in general would have an option (not requirement, mind you, but an option) to list gender.

k that was kind of a tangent. I digress.

Anyway, if you're doing things like Googling peoples' names to look for possible connections and combing through the results to try to find long-buried links they'd rather keep to themselves, or using underhanded means to get personal information - then yeah, I think that's creepy, whether you call it "resource building" or not.

Out of curiosity, what is the line of work you're entering?
