steve rogers/tony stark pairing

why is it so popular?. is there something in the comics that makes this pairing more obvious than just the avengers movie? cause...uh...i just don't get it.

This is what I've been told: in the comics Civil War is basically an epic lovers' spat between Steve and Tony and it's mentioned that in an alternate continuity it was averted because Steve was a girl and they got married.

Or something.

Nah, people were shipping it loooo

ong before Civil War. Civil War is just what made the floodgates open on the shitton of fanfic -- angst and make-up fic and hurt/comfort and fixfics and so on and so forth.

(It was Tony who was a girl, btw).

In the comics they've been really good friends for years, the type who are very different and fall out over big issues every now and again and angst like crazy about it, but always make up again in the end because their friendship is just that strong. Steve almost always supports Tony even when he does ridiculous awful shit, or at least forgives him later when Tony apologizes for it. Also, comics!Tony pretty much thinks Steve is the most wonderful person in existence and used to be a Captain America fanboy when he was little and has sacrificed himself a bunch of times for Steve because he thinks Steve's more important than him.

tl;dr, their relationship is almost the exact opposite of what it is in the movie in a lot of ways, but there's still enough similarities in some other ways to make comics shippers ship movie!Steve/Tony anyway because it's basically like a big AU fanfic.

i figured it'd be something like that...makes so much more sense now. i just couldn't understand how it was *that* popular from a few scenes. like, sure it'd be hot, but holy mother. now i get it. :)

I think they have a relationship with the potential to be interesting in the movie, though, but yeah, it's fueled by the comics. They are, like, THE OTP of whatever comics they're in. LOTS of subtext. Even before the Avengers movie aired (and maybe before Cap's? Idk), the pairing started booming because people assumed it'd be like it was in the comics.
