Stan-what.

The term "stan" started showing up in secrets and I ... don't get what makes it different from "fan." Can someone give anon a definition?

So it's ... a (derogatory) term for an obsessed fan? Thanks.

I can't decide whether to be glad or depressed. I'm sort of glad that fandom is slowly leaving behind the reputation it had with outsiders for being dangerously kooky. And sort of depressed that some other, smaller subcategory is getting the stigma.

at least it's a category of the really embarrassing ones that make everybody look bad.

It's not really derogatory? Not in my experience. Generally speaking it wouldn't be taken as an insult to be called a stan, I certainly wouldn't be insulted. The association with Eminem's song is kind of a wry one, most stans make hyperbolic jokes about how far they'd go for their object of affection, but it's generally not serious.

Considering it started on ONTD AFAIK, that should tell you a lot about how serious it is, anyway.

It's from an Eminem song, and it basically just means someone who is very invested in the thing they are a fan of, esp in the context of being really committed to defending it and arguing in favor of it and all that kind of thing.

Oh. Thanks.

I always think of it as a portmanteau of 'stalker-fan'.

I've always have a hard time reading it as a word for an individual, rather than a community, as I always read it as '-stan', as in 'Afghanistan', 'Pakistan', 'Kazakhstan', etc, rather than 'Stan'.

I don't remember where it came from, but I definitely remember it annoying me for unexplained reasons initially.

Anywho, it's basically a fan of something that rabidly (and sometimes preemptively) defends and maybe promotes the flavour of their choice. Can be used as a total verb.

For example, in ASOIAF fandom, I fucking love Brienne and Sansa and stan for them so hard at the mere mention of "uuuuugh they suck."
Check out these other stans :D
