I can't remember what Thomas's situation was when he started advising Daisy, but he's always been higher above her station-wise, and for a while, she did have a bit of a crush on him. But I also thought he had a slightly good point under all that smarm (he didn't mean to, though)--she really wasn't happy with the level she was at, and once he said something, she really started to notice.

Waaaay more naive is when Thomas started to take advice from Mrs. O'Brien.

That is what I didn't get. Why would Thomas of all people ever trust O'Brien on something like that. He knows more most how vicious she can be.
