And it's often enforced by their peers, sadly.
I know somebody who took out his earring when he hit 40, because 'men over 40 don't wear earrings'. Literally that. Not that he didn't dig the look any more, not that he had a career that required having it out. He just doesn't think men over 40 should wear earrings.
