While I don't agree with Mrs. Patmore's (or the rest of the staff for that matter) actions in pushing Daisy into William's arms, I understand why she did it. She'd just lost her nephew (and not a way that any family member would be proud) of and wanted to give William something to come home to so the same thing wouldn't happen to him. And her mind given that William was going to the front and might die, his wishes and wants superseded Daisy - who was still safe and sound in Yorkshire. It was the wrong thing to do, but I don't think there was any malicious intent.

As you said, one of the things I like the characters in the show. They are not just good or bad. They do awful things - and then turn around and do something decent.
