Rant Thread: a recent fandom experience that irritated you

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
This is a thread to rant pointlessly about an irritating or frustrating or disappointing experience you recently had in fandom, just to get it off your chest. :)

!! I need it.

I recently started hating my own fanfiction. I guess it is temporary, but I just think that it's ridiculous and I'm sick of it to death. Perhaps I should stop posting the stuff. [I'll be writing it anyway, since I need it]

Having people comment on my oldest pics on dA used to irritate me, because it was obvious that they hadn't bothered to read the artist's note or even the first comment, where their question was usually answered. I considered switching the comments off, but now I've made a game of it. There's this one picture that's several years old and has close to two hundred comments, many of them repeating the exact same joke. So now I'm just counting how many new people come around repeating it, and not bothering to check the submission date or the first page of comments. I call it my Dullard Count.

I'm rewatching Teen Wolf and now I'm pretty much done with this stupid fandom. And I ship Derek/Stiles and I'm saying that! I don't care what kinks you throw into your fics as long as the characters are in character and it seems like that's just not happening.

(and this goes for me as well, my fics are very fanon-ized and I'm so bad about that)

I follow my favorite show's showrunner on Twitter because I want to hear about the show, but jfc he throws hissy fits that rival those of a middle-school girl when people tweet things he disagrees with. He encourages/baits the faction of the fandom he says he doesn't want to hear from, and then is shocked when they react. Dude, learn to internet or gtfo.

Ugh. Everyone who watched SouthLAnd last week and threw a hissy fit about Cooper being gay. The amount of denial is unfuckingbelievable. He's said on at least two occasions going all the way back to the first season that he's gay (and as recently as the last), he's been shown with his boyfriend in both domestic and intimate situations, AND HE HAS SAID HE IS GAY. I cannot get over that people are still somehow in denial after all of that. And I want to scream because of the people who are refusing to watch now that "they've turned Cooper gay."

lmao, I know that's horrible but HOW DUMB DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO NOT KNOW HE'S GAY?! I think I started watching last season and that fact was made very clear. How is that possible to miss if you've been watching from the beginning?

That is awesome. And by awesome I mean stupid.

I went looking for anything about this and just learned that a gay cop commented on the actor's facebook page about wanting to see him in a healthy relationship and that he also wants to e an extra on the show. (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=505263959512657&id=112344302137960&comment_id=5531097&offset=0&total_comments=181) And then the actor made a post telling the guy to check his fb messages (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=505577026148017&id=112344302137960). That is possibly the coolest thing I've ever personally seen happen in any fandom.

You just made my day! I never would have seen that because I don't really do Facebook. And how freaking awesome that he's also telling people to chill about people not knowing Cooper is gay? Man, I feel like an asshole now. And I love him even more for basically spreading the "don't hate" message. The weirdest thing is that I think most of the posts by that account are actually by him, not handlers. They're very similar to his voice on Twitter and that is definitely run by him and him alone. But I thought celebrities never had anything to do with the "official" Facebook pages that their agents or whoever set up.

Whaaaaa? Seriously? We've known he's gay since season one. It's one of the awesome things about the show, that he's gay but he's not a 'very special character' or any of that shite (though I do wish he would/could be out at work).

I am baffled.

Recently posted a tentative timeline construction for one of my fandoms' newest installments. Got some likes and reblogs but even though I asked for feedback on it to see if anyone thought any of the stuff I was speculating on happened differently (there is time travel involved, without getting too specific), no one actually...said anything.

/I am aware this is very petty, yes.

this is more about tumblr being terrible for feedback and less about anything you doing anything specifically, don't worry

Eh, I guess it's okay really. I am gonna keep making meta posts so I have an archive of them if I ever find a place to share them.

sort of a peripheral experience, but I sort of want to slap people when they try to argue that Sora/Kairi is canon and Sora/Riku isn't. Excuse you, neither of them are technically official canon, you blind moron.

I'm replaying the games and my partner was going through the SoRiku tumblr tag and came across an Ask with somebody saying "just a friendly reminder that sokai is canon and soriku isn't :)" The user's response was A+, I just don't know what convinces somebody to go and send a message like that in the first place. I mean...really?

I'm getting incredibly frustrated by the ways Bifur (of The Hobbit) is used in fic. I'm now really wary of reading long fic (which I normally love) in this fandom because the longer a fic gets the better the chances of the author really pissing me off with how they choose to include him.

The division in the Cabin Pressure fandom is currently making me a bit sad.

Tumblr all loved the fourth season with a fiery passion because it gave them Martin-feels. Which is fine. Big chunks of Dreamwidth hated it with that same passion because it felt Martin-centric and pushed Douglas to the background. Which is also fine. I came down somewhere in the middle and liked it well enough, especially since it progressed my Herc/Carolyn otp.

But I do most of my fan-stuff on the Dreamwidth prompt-meme, which is dying a painful death as the haters seem to have stopped writing, and the lovers are busy making Tumblr text-gifs.

There is a moderately prominent person in my current fandom who does. not. get. that the reason why the villain of the canon is a villain is because he HURTS PEOPLE. She's been kicking up a fuss about 'bullies' who have tried to counter the Draco-In-Leather-Pants 'he's just misunderstood and the heroes should have just been nice to him!' bullshit she's been spewing all over the place. And because a) she's fairly prominent and b) I'm a big fan of said villain (while recognising that he's really not a good person in the slightest and totally deserved to have the shit kicked out of him by the heroes), I can't seem to avoid her. :P

(And yes, I know every Loki fan is nodding along and thinking, 'Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt'.)

A fandom friend of mine regularly takes credit for my shit, and it's RIDICULOUS because I don't even know if I should feel pissed about this? She's a really sweet girl but she consistently posts stuff I come up with (fic, mostly, though she'll often transcribe shit I've said in conversations with her) and she'll post it as her own. I didn't even notice it at first, but it's been a couple of months now and like, everything she's written has used stuff I've come up with, verbatim.

I have no idea of asking her hey, so what's up with that- chances are, she's not even aware she's doing it, and I feel big dumb baby for being frustrated. It sucks, because she works way faster than I do, and always ends up posting before I get a chance to? BLEH I hate feeling this ridiculous.

that's just not cool

she should say "so I was talking to XXX and then this happened" at least

I don't know how to deal with this either, sorry

at least with gtalk there are logs to prove she got the idea from you

Man do I need it!

Fandom friend meetup to see a new movie in the series that was coming out, just four of us. We all had to go to Friend A's location because she has bad social anxiety and cannot travel. Find out a day or two beforehand that now they have a family dinner so we have to leave earlier, and since we don't want to sit around in a train station for five hours, it means booking new tickets. >.< We get there, spend the night (not at their house, the other three of us have to rent a place because they can't handle having people in their house too long), that portion goes pretty well. Next morning I'm feeling pretty sick due to one of my meds, so I'm kind of out of it for a bit and let people know that I'm not feeling well. Apparently this is taken as me being hateful to personA. We go watch the movie, go to a coffeeshop, and personA (who's said maybe five words to me the entire day) decides we are awful and runs off to the bathroom to cry. They end up calling their mom to come get them, several hours early. Here's the real kicker to me, though: It's pouring rain, freezing, strong winds, in a city none of us know, nowhere near the train station, and they just leave us. Don't even offer a ride to the station, directions, even an umbrella. Not even a 'sorry'. We finally get to the train station and still have to sit around (soaking wet and freezing) for three hours until our train comes.

I was especially angry because this was a friend I had spoken to daily for almost a year, and yet they barely even said hi to me. And while I knew they had social anxiety, so do I! Not that bad, but I was still going way out of my comfort zone by visiting, and they *knew* that, and never - never, not even several days later when talking again on IM - did any of us hear a 'thanks for visiting' or a 'sorry for cutting it off'. *I* got told off by them and another for being snotty and mean and not catering enough to personA's needs! No one made any effort to be accommodating to me - not that I was really asking for it, but it would have been nice to be considered, especially when everyone else is moving heaven and earth to make personA feel comfortable.

I basically haven't spoken to them since and don't really plan on it, and I'm catching flak for that as well. I just feel so angry that I'm somehow seen as the person doing horrible things here and that anything I point out about them is just pushed aside as something 'they can't help'. And I feel pretty miserable losing one of my long time friends out of a small circle of friends.
