Ahaha, yes. I loved that people trotted out the "well, maybe they're just the best actors for the job!" argument...and then the movie actually came out and it turned out that they had no talent and sucked all the life out of the characters they were portraying.

Seriously, the problems with that movie go far, far beyond the fact that they cast white kids as the stars of a movie set in a universe where white people don't even exist.

White people do exist, tho

They're the bad guys

... Except for the part where the Fire Nation (and Earth Nation) was supposed to be (east) Asian, too. There actually aren't any white people in the series.

there's not a single western culture in the ATLA setting

to be fair, even for an experienced or talented actor it would be difficult to make anything out of that movie. the universe and characters in atla are pretty complicated and dynamic, and the movie kinda threw all that away in favor of... some other weird bullshit. normally for an adaptation, the movie isn't going to include all the subtleties of a completed series, so most actors would get familiar with the original stuff to build up their portrayal. since the movie is totally opposite to tone and characterization, they almost wouldn't be able to use the source material to understand the characters they're playing. i blame all this on m night, he did a lazy hack job, trying to turn it into a gritty comic book superhero movie, when the series is more of a coming of age friendship story.
