It happens sometimes but usually by that most vile of entitled fanspecies, The Wholockians.

Who fans are more likely to just wait things out of they don't like something. Waiting between series? That's fine because there's canon and fanon to tide you over if you really can't find anything outside the Whoniverse that you enjoy.

Sherlock fans, on the other hand, are some of the most entitled and butthurt fans ever. The amount of whining they did between ASIP and...whatever the second episode was called...was amazing. Sociologists 500 years from now are going to look back at the early 21st century and say "That's where it all went wrong."
