Blogger vs. Wordpress

[personal profile] dimestoresaint 2013-02-21 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
After a long, long haitus, I'm trying to go back to blogging about (mostly) classic movies, but I'm stuck on which one to use. I feel like Wordpress is generally seen as more professional, but the last time I tried to use it I just found it annoying to the point where I put off blogging altogether and ended up abandoning the project. On the other hand, most of the classic film bloggers I know use Blogger, so I feel like there's more of a community there, but in general it doesn't seem to be taken as seriously. I'm doing this for fun, but also to come up with writing samples I can use to apply for internships and the like.

Can anyone nudge me in either direction?

If it's just for fun and writing samples, why not Blogger? If someone is looking for your writing, will they care about the platform?

I guess I'm just associating it with advice from my college professors, who always said to use gmail instead of, say, Yahoo for email because it looks more professional. I can't recall them saying the same thing about Wordpress outright, but it's the only platform we ever used in class, so.

I'm more partial to Blogger if you're just gonna be blogging for fun. I don't think anyone will take issue with where you host your blog so long as it's organized with a pleasing layout.

Just wondering, what annoyed you about Wordpress?

Mostly that it ate a couple of really long posts that I had stupidly not backed up elsewhere. Also I had a hard time figuring it out at first, because I'm used to LJ/DW/Blogger which are all kind of basic in comparison.

Yeah, it has a learning curve and afaik it doesn't let you customize as much as Blogger does. Wordpress is great if you have your own domain to install it in. That's where its strength is. Their hosting site leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks, that's good to know.
