research question about f!s lingo
I have this list of lingo. It's mostly stuff seen in certain places on the internet but very common to f!s. I'm trying to avoid stuff that you see EVERYWHERE, but more like, stuff you'd see on LJ/DW, forums geared towards fandom discussion, etc. and are also really common on f!s. I don't know that we really have any f!s-exclusive lingo, but if we did that would be awesome.
Anyway, I was wondering if anything popped into anyone's mind and you wanted to tell me about some of the lingo you see around here? I thought I'd post a thread and see what kind of input I'd get, because I'm sure I didn't think of everything myself. Give me your ideas~~~!
Here's the list I've come up with on my own:
anon (short for anonymous; also going to include DA, NA, SA, and AYRT)
ship/shipping
meme (maybe. I know this is really internet-popular, but it's also a fun lingo word)
wank
wankbait
troll
dogpile
UST (not sure how specific this is to fandom/DW/LJ contexts)
SJW (this can't not be included)
Slash/femmeslash/het
OP
thread
calling out (like, "calling out" bad behavior/bigotry? idk)
soapbox
teel deer/tl;dr
gif (I know it's a file name, but we've taken to using it as its own word to refer to animated pictures)
warning (for triggers or courtesy warnings)
hate boner (not sure I will include this! but my prof is an anthro guy and I don't think the, er, coarseness will really bother him. He's all about brutal honesty.)
hth (maybe other sarcastic things we use to insult each other? like fify)
feels (just...the word feels, it is very DW/LJ/Tumblr)
a variety of creative insults (some of my favorites are "shitweasel", "sausage wallet" and "douchewaffle")
Anyone got any input/ideas? I'd be very grateful!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 01:15 am (UTC)(link)Oh, you need BNF (and maybe SMOF, but that's from RL conventioneering days and doesn't usually apply to online-only fen).
Seems the fandom wank wiki is not up right now, but that might be a good source for some more terms if it's archived somewhere or gets fixed soon.
Re: research question about f!s lingo
I'm not sure what SMOF stands for lol...

NAYRT
nonnie
Can Shit Stream count?
Snape Wives (maybe a bit too fandom specific)
Re: research question about f!s lingo
IAWTC/IA/ITA etc
neckbeard (although that's very sfd)
Snape Wives or "on the astral plane" could count

genderswap
BNF
circlejerk?
_/10, rating trolls in general.
headcanon
I'd also include "nonnie" in the anon list.
Hm, that's all I got.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 02:04 am (UTC)(link)Then there's "step on a Lego"--I don't think I've seen that outside of certain fandom circles, including F!S, where it's unacceptable to say DIAF.

Re: research question about f!s lingo
(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 02:27 am (UTC)(link)use the wayback machine for fandomwank wiki
trolling in the deep/adele version of troll in the dungeon
anything that references popcorn in wanky threads
use of reaction gifs and memefaces? it isn't exactly words but it's a way to comment? memeface comments are more popular in reddit but it's shown up here once in a while
also, avatar-only comments, you know, ones with icons only and no text in the comment? this is lj-clone exclusive afaik
also try fanlore, it's another good fannish source
Re: research question about f!s lingo
Troll, tl;dr, OP, meme, hth, and thread are universal on the net (thread being the technical term, and all). Gif as shorthand for animated gif is common, though maybe not universal. (I've seen it used for images in general, too.)
Teal Dear, I'm pretty sure was coined in an old non-fandom usenet group I used to read. (alt.folklore.urban - if not coined there, very popular there, even so.)
I don't think 'calling out' is particularly fandom specific, but I haven't seen it a whole lot in general.
Soapbox is pretty common IRL, as well as on the net.

Stan(ning)!
Re: research question about f!s lingo
OP (Original Poster)
SA (Same Anon)
DA (Different Anon)
AYRT (Anon you replied to)
NAYRT (Not the anon you replied to)
Awhile ago I saw somebody use NATWYR - which I presume means 'Not the anon to whom you replied' - which charmed me.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)lmgtfy (let me google that for you)
stan (portmanteau of stalker/fan, hardcore fan)
also, maybe some sjw terms that popped up a lot when that was big around here?
tone argument (you were yelling/rude so shut up)
white-washing (the characters were made to look white/whiter)
and more general internet things but I see them more here or at least around lj:
lj: livejournal
ngl: not gonna lie
imo/imho: in my opinion/in my humble opinion/in my honest opinion
the pit: fanfiction.net
AO3: archiveofourown.org
