Really fucking scatterbrained.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
So, uh, I'm really forgetful when it comes to anything that isn't attached to my body. It's gotten a lot worse lately and I'm not sure what to do about it. Like, today I didn't even realize that I left my backpack (with my wallet) on campus until the campus closed. Help, please?

i find it helps if you narrate your actions ahead of time with the assumption that you will later forget. i'll tell myself shit like "my keycard is in my sweater pocket" out loud, and for some reason that helps me remember.

i mean yeah, you'll look kind of funny if anyone's watching you, but kind of preferrable over the alternative.

This little habit helped me: never ever ever leave a public place without checking your seat/table first. It's so easy to forget things when you're preoccupied so I'll always take a quick look back as I'm leaving.

You can also try reciting a short mental list in your head before leaving: wallet, phone, keys. So long as I have those on me, I'm fine. Whenever I have to relocate, I play that list in my head and I never forget.

That sounds like a good idea; hopefully, I'll be able to get into the habit quick. Thanks so much! :D!

yeah, I'll just echo what other have said about getting into a double-checking routine and doing a visual, verbal and physical check to make sure you got everything you needed

also, write down a list or pretend you're a character in a story who has to go through the routine every day or something, like

"do I have my emergency bat suit on? yes. emergency access to the batmobile? yes. emergency contact to albert? yes. I'm good to go!"

idk if this will help but I've conditioned myself to never close the door to my apartment or car until I've put my hand in my pocket and felt my keys there. Maybe you could try doing something similar for situations where you might forget important objects?

That sounds good! Also, it turns out that my backpack somehow managed to hide in my bed even though I checked it a few times. So thankfully it wasn't on campus.
