I can't answer for advertisers, but I'd theorize that usually with girls it's the leg and it looks more aesthically appealing to see somebody pulling something up the leg then bending over and increasingly obscuring the view.

With guys it looks less award if they pull down the face.

I can tell you at least with dudes we do usually first cut with then against the grain going back, I'd imagine girls are similiar since that's how hair works, but I'd bet how it all looks is why they do it the way they do.

I never nick myself shaving and it's always against the grain. First because it's actually pretty awkward to shave flipped the other way, and the second because it's more effective in my experience.

I very rarely have to do a second pass when shaving against the grain. If I went with it, the hair would be flattened against my leg and wouldn't all be shaved at once. Shaving against the grain pushes it up and away from the leg.

Female leg hair is generally a different makeup from male facial hair, though. Even at my hairiest (which is pretty damn hairy - I've never shaved regularly), I'd always shave my legs against the grain, because the hair is limp and flattened against my skin from the soap and water. Shaving with the grain would maybe remove some of it, but it's easier and more effective to go against from the start.

Male facial hair is usually thicker, and the skin on your face is somewhat more sensitive than the skin on your legs. I imagine when it gets to a certain length, it's really uncomfortable to shave against from the start. Removing some of the length by going with the first time reduces the pull from going against. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the impression I get.

Pretty much. I try to cut against the grain from the get-go on a shaggy day, odds are good I'll cut myself. I imagine it's different from guy to guy but I'll bet I'm not alone in that. Go with the grain first then reverse it, and that wont happen.
