I always thought it was weird that Lisa's son goes by "Ben" (which I considered to be a shortened and masculine form of Benjamin), yet the vampire is referred to as "Benny" which I see as very little kiddish.

Lol, same here. Knowing the writers they wrote the character as "Ben" but were probably shocked to find out that Ben was a relatively important character in season 6 so chucked on a couple of letters to the name.

So? There are a lot of grown men who still go by nicknames like Benny or Johnny or Eddie, because Ben or John or Ed sound too short or too stiff or because they just don't like being called that.

Really? I know several IRL and I can also think of several fictional characters for whom that's true. Come on, not every man decides at some random age that he suddenly hates the nickname his friends and family have always used for him. Do you also expect women to stop using their 'childish' nicknames? Because they don't do that either.

The name is a deliberate change, he originally went by "Ben" but switched to "Benny" to avoid copyright reasons when he teamed up with Jerry from Fright Night to start an icecream business in Las Vegas. Mmmmm artery ripple with blood-clots. The business went under when some hunters came to town and Benny sadly died in the conflict, but of course he had the good luck to run into Dean and got free of purgatory to restart his undead life. Alls well that ends well. :)
