Still don't know what an operetta is. (Or rather, that's the difference between an operetta and a musical, though the Internet tells me the difference between an operetta and an opera is basically that the operetta has some spoken dialogue whereas an opera has none...? IDK.) I am neither a music person nor a stageplay person, so musicals (and variations thereof) are basically one of THE subject I'm least knowledgeable about...though to be quite frank, the arts in general I'm not really that familiar with, besides things you can read.
While I do get, now, that the no-speaking thing is to try and stay true to the stageplay, I still feel like if they were making a film adaptation, they should've gone all the way and included some more speaking as well as speaking. Constant singing doesn't work as well for a movie as it does for a stageplay, and that really showed in the film. (Though I did still like it!)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)There are plenty of non-sung adaptations of Les Miz. I'm thrilled that the musical got the full movie treatment.
