You know what an opera is right?

Man, I love how condescending all these comments are, as if you're all opera connoisseurs and that anyone who finds the style of Les Mis to be less than good is somehow some simpleton.

Shut the fuck up.

lol, someone realizing they have a stupid opinion and compensating by calling others fake elitists. Funniest shit I've seen all week.

I didn't

Not until this movie, anyway. I don't really like musicals too much, so outside of Disney I tend to avoid anything with lots of singing. I went in expecting it to be a typical "musical" format, with a mix of dialogue and singing, and it took me almost a third of the movie to realize there would be no spoken dialogue. (I still liked the movie, but mostly based on the visuals and acting rather than the singing). I looked it all up when I got home and that's when I learned what an opera is.

Still don't know what an operetta is. (Or rather, that's the difference between an operetta and a musical, though the Internet tells me the difference between an operetta and an opera is basically that the operetta has some spoken dialogue whereas an opera has none...? IDK.) I am neither a music person nor a stageplay person, so musicals (and variations thereof) are basically one of THE subject I'm least knowledgeable about...though to be quite frank, the arts in general I'm not really that familiar with, besides things you can read.

While I do get, now, that the no-speaking thing is to try and stay true to the stageplay, I still feel like if they were making a film adaptation, they should've gone all the way and included some more speaking as well as speaking. Constant singing doesn't work as well for a movie as it does for a stageplay, and that really showed in the film. (Though I did still like it!)

I disagree with your last point. It really bugs me when they take a show that's completely sung through try and change the recitative lyrics and attempt to make them spoken, non-sung dialogue. It never sounds right, imo. They tried in the movie versions of Rent, among many others, and it just felt awkward.

There are plenty of non-sung adaptations of Les Miz. I'm thrilled that the musical got the full movie treatment.
