But there IS a Brothers Karamazov movie! Where else would you find casting directors somehow thinking they could pass Yul Brynner and William Shatner off as brothers?!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
That would be awesome. :)

I loved the Anna Karenina movie!

Anyway, I would like to see a Crime and Punishment movie. Although idk. I feel like it'd be hard to condense Doestoyevski into a movie. You'd probably lose a lot.

BBC did a TV movie of Crime and Punishment about 10 years ago starring John Simm. It's awesome.

I shudder to think what Hollywood do with the story.

The John Simm version is FANTASTIC. I actually prefer it to the black and white Russian adaptation made in the 70s, because Simm is such a perfect Raskolnikov. The Sonya in the Russian adaptation is far superior to the BBC one, though.

Agree with you there anon, I loved that BBC adaptation, I liked it better than the book in fact!

I would've thought Karamazov Brothers is one of the most likely to be remade? Since it's so popular.

On a slightly related note- I really really love Kurosawa's version of The Idiot.

Oh, I want to see Anna Karenina so badly! Haven't got a chance yet. I have some apprehensions regarding Anna herself - I think that Keira Knightley is too pointy and nervous-looking for this role. I've always imagined her as a soft, perhaps even a little plumpy woman. She looks good on the posters, though.
Vronskiy rubs me the wrong way. I believed him to be black-haired, and this blond beauty... just... no.
Also in the word "Moskva" (Moscow, that is) they got a Russian letter wrong.

It would be hilarious to see a screen version of Demons. I think I know already that they'd make a neat moralistic story out of this delirious mess (this I mean in a good way). Kirillov would be beautiful, I bet. And Shatov!

As to Brothers Karamazov, I'm really interested in "The Great Inquisitor" chapter. It looks perfectly unscreenable.

(thanks to you, I just checked and discovered that Andrzej Wajda has a Demons film. Knowing Wajda, I think it's a good one. I'm going to watch it)

Be careful what you wish for... I've been saying for years that War and Peace would make an awesome mini-series and now there is going to be one and according to there will be hot actors and Andrei is like Mr. Darcy and I'm like, oh, no...

Does the Anna Karenina movie end where most adaptations do, or do we get to watch Levin wandering around thinking for a half hour?

There's a Russian mini-series, if you haven't seen? It even won the Golden Globe in its time. Although Andrei is also sort of hot there, but he's supposed to be, according to the canon.

Andrei is supposed to be hot, but he's not Darcyesque at all.

Yeah, I agree.

IIRC it ends with Levin tooling around quite briefly, and a generally upbeat sense that despite his earlier angst in a haystack, he's got it together and he and Kitty and the kid and the thunderstorm will be A-OK.

KK is utterly contemptible throughout though, so Anna's death isn't so much a point of climax as a desperately overdue relief. By contrast the Levin stuff is almost sweet.

There's also IvansXTC which is a modernised reworking of The Death of Ivan Illyich

I think I would be afraid of who they would cast for the Karamazov brothers.

It might not be too bad of an idea to do a Dostoevsky novel as a movie.

Wait, what am I saying?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
The Brothers Bloom was inspired by the Brothers Karamazov. Just FYI.

Anna Karenina has been made into a movie before. Several times, actually, and there have been tv miniseries as well.

The most recent version was really good, and really quite odd. Very stylized, in a way that left my friend saying "what did we just watch?" while I was saying "Now I've got to read the book."

Go for it.

"Now that Tolstoy's Anna Karenina has been made into a Hollywood movie"

It's bad. Really bad. Like an 2 hour Chanel commercial.
