I think "so sexist!" is a kneejerk reaction to this based on the fact that for a long time this was how everyone thought relationships were Supposed To Be and a woman who would rather stand up for herself or for her partner, or a man who wanted to be protected, or something like that was Doing It Wrong. But it's the imposition of those rules, and the reasons they're imposed, that are sexist, not the rules themselves. It's just one variation on relationship dynamics.
