I like it whenever one character physically protects another like that. No matter the genders involved or even if it would help. It's really touching, to me. Like the one character has an instinctive reaction of 'you won't hurt her/him!' even if it wouldn't do any good in the circumstances.

So I guess I sorta get it? At least I understand why you like the dynamic anyway, even if it doesn't extend for all gender combinations with you.

This. I adore this gesture. It pushes so many buttons for me. Gender (or species) is irrelevant.

Though I will admit to a little extra tingle when enemies do this, because of what that says about the character doing the protecting ...

I've loved the whole protectiveness thing since I was a kid and never outgrew it. It might've been projecting and wishful thinking since I was social phobic and wish I had someone to keep me safe around people and it never happened, so... In my characters, at least they could be safe.
