I mean, when she wants to go to CNN.com or something, she will hit the back button until she gets to her google homepage, search for CNN, and to CNN.com from there. Instead of you know, typing cnn.com into the address bar.

My mother once told me that I was on the internet too much and deleted the internet explorer icon from my Mac computer. She works for Apple, but still....

I die a little inside every time she does it. Or when she backspaces a whole sentence because one word is misspelled.

My dad does the same thing, but for his Gmail account. I can't quite get it through to him that he can just type in "gmail.com" instead of Googling "gmail." Or, at least, clicking the "mail" tab on Google's home page.

I was about to say "My ex googles things rather than typing into the address bar, and he spends 80 percent of his waking time at a computer", but then I saw this:

hit the back button until she gets to her google homepage

... Aww. =) At least my ex uses the Search box, so a lot of the time it's actually faster, especially since you don't have to remember exact domain names (making Embarrassing Accidental Porn Moments easier to avoid, for one thing) and it lets you find specific pages at once. Actually going back to google for a start page ... Nope. =) But hey, if she's more comfortable doing it that way, I don't really see a problem.

I think it's really hard for people not used to dealing with computers and the internet to really understand how somethings aren't like the physical world at all. As an internet newbie I used to actually write down URLs (for Geocities sites!) and email addresses on paper rather than bookmark/save to address book. I'd also reuse text files - still have to remind myself that it's perfectly fine to delete one and create a new one in the same folder, rather than wipe old content - type in new content - rename (because you shouldn't throw things away if they're still working fine, amirite?). The force of habit is a strong one.
