Obviously you can't stop people from doing it and I don't think one should. I can see the point though on some level - you draw something (or in my case write something) and someone else comes along and reinterprets it... they might want your endorsement (awkward) or whatnot. Again, not that it's right to demand no one ever anywhere does this kind of thing...

I think of a situation I had where I was posting some fic on my LJ. This random person started commenting... with comment fic that ADDED to my story (badly, they didn't have the tone or the character's voices and...it was just bad). I finally had to step in after about the third time and say "Look, I'm glad my fanfic inspires you, but you either need to post this on your personal journal or not do it because I like where my story ended and I worked hard on it and if I'd wanted that scene, I would have included it." I gave her a week to copy the comment additions and then I deleted them. It was a weird experience. I mean, that's great that my story inspired you or you wanted more, but seriously? I wouldn't scrawl fanfic on the inside cover of Harry Potter, why are you scrawling fanfic on the end of my fanfic? Fanfic away, but do so not here (and don't ask me to endorse it or link to it).

AYRT

That is a different situation. Writing a fic inspired by another is one thing; however, posting it to the fic in question is another thing entirely. I think you handled it well. I likely would have screened it immediately, not waited a week.

I also agree with the not wanting to endorse or link other fanfic even if inspired by yours. I don't think anyone should feel obligated to do so.

I may have screened it or maybe I only waited a couple days. This was a few years ago so the details are fuzzy. I do know that person never commented on my fic again. All things considered. I was okay with that.

WTF, man. I love fandom and fanfic writers and all, but some of them are just plain bugnutty and lack the self awareness not to get their crazy all over other peoples' personal space. You were very kind about it.

Actually, now I'm wondering if maybe this secret is about artists who get fanfic in the comments?

Because some (most) of comment-fic for fanart? It is weird-to-crazy-to-borderline-creepy.
