(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 12:34 am (UTC)(link)I agree with the fan art part. As yes, it is amusing that someone would base something off someone else's work and then not allow others to base off of their work.
However, I don't agree with the OC thing. Sure, it would be tacky to take someone's OC's and have them as part of your world. However, that's how original creators feel all of the time. I have seen so many horrific RPs and fanfics and the like that just butcher characterization. As a fan I can't even stand to deal with them, so I cannot even possibly imagine how an author/screenwriter/whatever would feel if he/she stumbled across them.
But still. It is done out of love and with no desire for profit, so I think creators need to suck it up and deal with it as part of putting their works out there. I have so much more respect for creators that say "I don't want to/can't see it, for whatever reason, but have fun with it, and I'm glad you are enjoying my work enough that you feel the desire to do this." than those who flip out about the idea of anyone playing with their characters or in their world. After reading the Diana Gabaldon thread yesterday, I actually went and picked up some books today by authors mentioned as being good with fanfic. Not that I intend to write any fanfic for said books, but it is the principle of the matter. Those are the kinds of people I want to support.

But eh.
Though I am of the mindset that, if it's out there, don't get your undies in a twist when people write or draw for them. It's why I roll my eyes and deliberately draw or find fic for series like A Song of Ice and Fire, because I knows it annoys the creators.
