I still like a theory a friend and I came up with, that every now and then the Sorting Hat puts a Ravenclaw into Gryffindor to try and avoid the house doing some brave yet completely stupid thing and getting themselves all killed.

Granted, Hermione's track record at preventing such things is not so great. But it still amuses me.
