That does not look like someone protecting someone. That looks like the dude's going all Take Me I'm Yours and the woman is kind of just looking at the viewer wondering what the hell is going on.

They made him do some variation of a 'take me I'm yours' pose in basically every single promo picture. The producers and marketers were definitely aware that that's what the girls in the audience wanted to see. ;) It's kinda great. Like a genderswap of all the nonsensically-sexy posing actresses do in the promos for basically every other show ever.
