Well as someone who works in a social services setting, so with characters like those in the book, and in England, I would say it's realistic but life isn't really as grim as she would have it. The thing I love about Britain, having lived in other places, is that it is so mixed, and life is pretty OK for most people. Yes there's people who struggle, and the welfare state is being eroded, but there is a safety net in this country that is at least still there for people. And some pretty good social workers and the like as well.
