People really make fun of him for that? :/ I thought the fact that it was a pretty common pokemon just made it sweeter. Sure, the area is crawling with purrloins, but none of those are the one that his grandfather caught or the one that his sister loved. I'm a little baffled that people don't understand this

I also read it about him being really concerned over his sister's feelings, which means that he's not just searching for a Purrloin, he wants his sister to be happy. He's a really protective older brother and everything he does in the game until he gets it back is for her. It's really sweet.

I mean I didn't like him all that much as a rival since it seems you rarely fought him (or maybe that's just compared to Cheren, Bianca, N, or some combination of all three after every badge from BW1), but he was a good character.

This is how I see him too.

You barely fight (not even just compared with BW1... compared to practically any other rival ever) and when you do fight him it's because he wants to spar with you and not because he wants to beat you, he COUNTS on you being stronger than him so you can bail him out if he gets in trouble with Team Plasma, and IIRC he encourages you to go on and become League Champion without ever showing interest in taking that title for himself. But, I like him as a character anyway. I just don't get why they bothered to call him a rival at all.

Cheren, Bianca and N were almost worse than Gary. In a good way, but still. You walk into a new city... CHALLENGE. You're on your way to leave... CHALLENGE. In front of an arena, in front of a tunnel entrance, at the end of a tunnel, inside the tunnel, GAH. Leave me alone for a bit! Okay, actually don't, because it was really awesome to actually interact with the characters so much.

I could actually care about them because I saw them so much. They had character arcs! It was kind of awesome.

Hugh had a character arc too, but his felt less rival-y than theirs.

I didn't like the way they handled Cheren and Bianca, but I think part of that was that their rival battles were just NOT CHALLENGING at all. They never went above four standard-issue Pokémon apiece. YAWN.

Going by the people in my neighborhood/my past schools... it's likely they HAVE owned pets. They just see them in this way. Lost/dies? REPLACE IT. They don't view pets as beings with personality and just abuse and neglect the shit out of them.

Echoing the "people really made fun of him for that?" sentiment. Hell, that's what finally made me warm up to him and stop viewing him as a mere annoyance and source of XP. As a pet owner who had two beloved cats disappear without a trace on the same day and who never found out what happened to them, I can really sympathize with him on that. I know this is really dorky, but I was so happy when he succeeded and gave his sister back her Pokemon.

I agree with this secret. When I first played the game and Vio asked him why he was so worked up about a common Pokemon, and Hugh went into that backstory about how his grandfather caught it to give to Hugh's sister before he died, I was like "What is the point of this dialogue? Isn't it obvious that he and his sister love the individual Pokemon? Do they really need to throw in a dead grandfather to explain why Hugh wants to get it back?"

And then I went on Youtube and Cheezburger and saw all the people saying his goal was stupid and they didn't understand it (even WITH the dead grandfather backstory). And I facepalmed.

To be fair a lot of them were just trying to be funny, but some were serious too.

Didn't you know? Nobody in the Pokemon fandom cares about the Pokemon as characters unless it's Mewtwo. Only the humans are REAL characters.

Yes, I know I'm generalizing, but the fandom giving all the attention to human characters drives me up a wall.

It's really too bad, but I have seen this for myself. But it's not really about "Hugh y u so dumb" it's more of a "Purrloin is a shit pokemon why would you want one." I've seen a lot of hate for the poor thing, and I even made it my mission to take one to the Elite Four on White 2. And you know what? I did, and that Purrloin (Liepard by that point) was one of my most-reliable Pokemon on my team and I don't regret raising him one bit.

That said, I really liked Hugh as a character. He gets a lot of jokes directed at him, but he was just super-determined to accomplish his goal, as other people above me have mentioned.

That's a dumb reason to make fun of Hugh, but there are plenty of other reasons to make fun of Hugh ("I'M ABOUT TO UNLEASH MY RAGE").

Also, if the Purrloin is so special, why just call it Purrloin? Why not give it a name?

Plus, the fact that "Purrloin" got stolen is irritatingly apropos.

I agree with you about the rage thing being a perfectly valid reason to make fun of Hugh.

As far as not nicknaming it goes... that's pretty common in the Pokémon world, plus even IRL it's not unusual for little kids to name animals after their species anyway. My friend had a cat named Cat for this reason.

On one hand, I agree with you for that.

On the other hand, it kind of chafes that he's more worried about his sister's five-years-gone cat than about his ostensibly best friend that he keeps nearly getting killed because of his quest for Purrloin.

Also, I was kind of expecting N to go, "Oh, that Purrloin? I released it back into the wild a couple of years ago."
