commenting question

There's this fic I'm reading that's about a character developing an eating disorder. In the notes the author plainly states that they're basing it all off of personal experience, also that they don't use a beta. It's an okay fic but I feel they use way too many triggery details (detailed depictions and instructions for purging, very specific numbers, etc) and I'm wondering if I should just stop reading and ignore it, or if it would be appropriate for me to leave a comment? Something along the lines of the fic needing a beta and possibly going easy on so many details (srsly this fic reads like some of the old "pro-ana" sites with the amount of details and numbers).

I get that this is probably therapeutic for the author, but I also feel that it's a pretty well known fact that when writing about ED the exclusion of numbers and specifics is kind of a given. But then, maybe I'm just overly familiar with that kind of discussion. I don't know.

I think you should stop reading it, if it bothers you. It's one thing to leave out details if you're merely discussing and talking about it, but this is a story. So, unless the writer does a fade-to-black or whatever, it's bound to include graphic scenes if that's indeed the focus. And yeah, it might be very cathartic for her/him to write.

I would expect details, I just find it odd the amount of details. It is seriously reading like a How To.

But thanks. Yeah I stopped reading to post the comment and haven't gone back. It's just one of those topics that worries me so I was wondering if I should speak up or not. Thanks for the feedback.

Stop reading it. It's not your business to tell this person how they should write their fic.

I've never heard of ED "fanfic rules" beyond "use a warning." And yeah, leave the author alone to write the story they want to write for whatever reason they want to write it. If you find other people who are looking for ED fic, and you want to rec this one, give them the warning you think is appropriate before doing so.

It's a fic, it's not an article. It seems pretty clear that she doesn't want to use a beta, and she's writing the story she wants to write. She's already warning. There's no reason to police the content. Just don't read it if it bothers you.
