Friendships among unequals

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So I know people always discuss romances where there are power imbalances in the relationship, but what about platonic friendships? I like these a lot - more than romances, because romance for me tends to distract from exploration of the nitty-gritty of the personal interaction between the friends, but what are some examples of your favorite friendships between people with vastly unequal power dynamics?

Man, this is one of my bullet-proof fictional sweet spots.

Basically Bartlet/Everyone in The West Wing, but Bartlet and Leo and Bartlet and Mrs. Landingham especially.

Lots of stuff from Star Trek, but wrt power imbalances, particularly Picard and Data from TNG.

Radar and Henry Blake in M*A*S*H. Just...Radar and Henry. Radar and Potter also, but Radar and Henry were special.

A lot of Doctor/Companion relationships in Doctor Who, taking a super extra special note of Ten and Donna because of the spotlight that was thrown on this idea.

Harry Potter and Professor McGonagall. Okay, fine, technically it's not really close enough to be a friendship, but there's a reason Career Advice is one of my favorite chapters in the series.

Liz and Jack from 30 Rock, and Leslie and Ron from Parks and Recreation. I actually like Leslie and Ron's better, because I feel like Ron has infinitely more respect for Leslie as a person (even though he disagrees with her politically) than Jack seemed to have for Liz for most of their relationship, but the last episode of 30 Rock, with Jack telling Liz he loved her in a purely platonic way was incredibly satisfying to me.

Arthur and Merlin is probably my favorite. (Though obviously they're not that unequal in reality, the dynamic remains so because Merlin hides his magic.)

I really love some of the friendships in Downton Abbey between the family and their servants. Robert and Mr. Bates for example, and Mary and Anna.
